What is the Happiness Index?

This calculator combines two validated psychology scales: the Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS) by Sonja Lyubomirsky and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) by Ed Diener. Together, they measure your subjective well-being—how happy you feel and how satisfied you are with your life overall.

Two Components of Well-Being

Subjective Happiness (SHS)

Measures your general sense of happiness—how happy you perceive yourself to be compared to others and how much you enjoy life in general.

Life Satisfaction (SWLS)

Measures cognitive judgments about your life—whether your life is close to your ideal and whether you've achieved the things you want.

The Science of Happiness

  • 50% Genetic: Research suggests about half of happiness is determined by your "set point."
  • 40% Activities: Intentional activities (gratitude, exercise, social connection) significantly impact happiness.
  • 10% Circumstances: External factors like income and location matter less than we think.
