How NPS Works
The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary contribution scheme that offers market-linked returns. It is one of the most efficient tax-saving instruments for retirement planning in India.
Accumulation Phase
You invest systematically until the age of 60. Your money is invested in a mix of Equity (E), Corporate Bonds (C), and Govt Securities (G) based on your choice.
Withdrawal Phase
At 60, you can withdraw up to 60% of the corpus as a tax-free lump sum. The remaining 40% (minimum) must be used to buy an annuity to provide a monthly pension.
NPS Tax Benefits (Old vs New Regime)
| Section | Limit | Benefit Type |
|---|---|---|
| 80C | ₹1.5 Lakh | Part of the overall 1.5L limit (along with PPF, ELSS, LIC). |
| 80CCD(1B) | ₹50,000 | Exclusive additional deduction over and above 80C limit. |
| 80CCD(2) | 10% of Salary | Employer's contribution deduction (For Salaried). |
Common Questions
The 60% lump sum withdrawal at maturity is completely tax-free. The remaining 40% used for annuity is also tax-exempt at the time of purchase, but the monthly pension received from the annuity is taxable as per your income slab.
Active Choice: You decide the asset allocation (Equity max 75%).
Auto Choice: Allocation is automatically determined based on your age. Equity exposure reduces as you get older to protect the corpus.
