Paint Calculator Guide

How to Calculate Paint Coverage

1. Measure Your Surface

Measure the length and height (or width) of the surface you're painting. For rooms, measure all walls.

2. Account for Doors & Windows

Standard door: 21 sq ft (3ft × 7ft)
Standard window: 15 sq ft (3ft × 5ft)

3. Consider Number of Coats

Most projects need 2 coats. Primer or color changes may require more.

4. Check Coverage Rate

Standard paint: 350-400 sq ft per gallon
Primer: 200-300 sq ft per gallon
Textured surfaces: 250-300 sq ft per gallon

Paint Types & Coverage

  • Flat/Matte: 350-400 sq ft/gallon
  • Eggshell/Satin: 350-400 sq ft/gallon
  • Semi-Gloss: 350-400 sq ft/gallon
  • High-Gloss: 300-350 sq ft/gallon
Pro Tips
  • Buy Extra
Purchase 10-15% more paint than calculated for touch-ups and future repairs.
  • Primer First
Use primer on new drywall or when making dramatic color changes.
  • Quality Matters
Higher quality paint often covers better, potentially saving you a coat.
Common Room Sizes
  • Small Room: 10×10×8 ft = ~1.5 gallons
  • Medium Room: 12×15×8 ft = ~2 gallons
  • Large Room: 15×20×9 ft = ~3 gallons

Did You Know?

The color you choose affects coverage! Darker colors often require more coats than lighter ones, especially when painting over a different color.
