Drywall Calculator Guide

How to Calculate Drywall

1. Measure Your Room

Measure length, width, and height of the room. For walls only, you'll need all 4 wall areas.

2. Choose Sheet Size

Standard: 4'×8' (32 sq ft)
Longer: 4'×10' (40 sq ft) or 4'×12' (48 sq ft)

Longer sheets reduce seams but are harder to handle.

3. Add Waste Factor

Typical waste: 10-15% for cuts, mistakes, and odd shapes.

4. Account for Openings

Subtract doors and windows to avoid over-ordering.

Material Estimates

  • Screws: ~32 per sheet (12" spacing on 16" studs)
  • Joint Compound: ~0.053 gal per 100 sq ft
  • Joint Tape: ~370 ft per 1000 sq ft
Pro Tips
  • Orientation
Hang sheets horizontally for fewer seams and stronger walls.
  • Thickness
1/2" for walls, 5/8" for ceilings or fire-rated applications.
  • Stagger Seams
Offset seams between rows for better strength.
Sheet Sizes
  • 4' × 8': 32 sq ft (most common)
  • 4' × 10': 40 sq ft
  • 4' × 12': 48 sq ft
