Understanding Narcissism

Narcissism exists on a spectrum. At healthy levels, it's self-confidence. At extreme levels, it can be a personality disorder. This test uses the NPI-16 (Narcissistic Personality Inventory - 16 items), a validated research tool that measures subclinical narcissistic traits in the general population.

Narcissism is Not Binary

Healthy Self-Esteem

Confidence without needing constant external validation. Able to accept criticism.

Grandiose Narcissism

High self-importance, need for admiration, and feelings of superiority. What the NPI primarily measures.

Vulnerable Narcissism

Hidden beneath low self-esteem, hypersensitivity, and needing reassurance. Not measured by NPI.

Key Facets of Narcissism

  • Leadership/Authority: Desire to be in charge and have others follow.
  • Exhibitionism: Enjoyment of being the center of attention.
  • Superiority: Belief in being better than others.
  • Entitlement/Exploitativeness: Expectation of special treatment; using others.
Important Disclaimer: This test measures subclinical narcissistic traits found in the general population. A high score does NOT mean you have Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). NPD is a clinical diagnosis requiring a professional evaluation. This is for educational purposes only.
NPI-16 Norms

Average score in the general population is around 5-7 out of 16. Celebrities and leaders often score higher.
